What Is Cyber Threat Intelligence

Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) is the process of collating, interrogating and evaluating various threads of information in the context of its source and reliability, and analysing it through rigorous and structured tradecraft techniques by skilled and experienced specialists with road access to all-source information. The results are analysed to produce intelligence and the resulting intelligence is disseminated and re-evaluated in the context of new information and consumer feedback. Rather than being developed in an end-to-end process, the development of intelligence is a cognitive process, referred to as the intelligence cycle. Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) is now recognised by businesses of all sizes as an integral pillar in their organisation’s cybersecurity maturity strategy. When applied well, threat intelligence can assist security teams defend against an ever-more sophisticated and evolving threat landscape before, during and after attack. By studying threat actors and understanding their TTPs (Tactics, Techniques and Procedures) and objectives, organisations can build more effective, more refined and more robust cyber defences. Whilst there is of course no one-size-fits-all approach to cybersecurity, threat intelligence can provide an enhanced level of understanding around the factors that lead to attacks, mitigate the impact of one when it happens and proactively put in place measures to protect the organisation, its digital assets, and more importantly, its brand and reputation. These methods require a high level of specialist knowledge and experience and whilst it is very easy for some providers to state that they provide actional cyber threat intelligence, doing it effectively requires a lot of experience in the field.
